Getting on with it
It's been forever since I posted, and the longer it's been, the greater that internal pressure to write something really good: something witty, brilliant, timely.

This isn't that. This is just a few words because I haven't posted here since July (really July? jeez louise).

Witty, brilliant, and timely will have to go on waiting.

And I was getting antsy because I hadn't posted since September! Now I have permission to delay another three months...

Selfishly, I wish you wouldn't, Rich. I wish I hadn't, myself. This is a remarkably good way to stay vaguely in touch with many more people than would otherwise be possible for me, but only if we all use its power for good instead of evil.

Oh, I wasn't serious. In fact you managed to goose me into at least posting the Hawaii fruit pictures I'd been meaning to do for a couple weeks, thanks.

Welcome back.

And those of us who have not achieved witty, brilliant, and timely all breathe a sigh of relief that you have so courteously not shown us up.:)

I am not going to spend the time going back to find all your posts that made me laugh out loud, Ms. Pat. I am merely going to state that they exist, and keep moving. Since it's nowhere near my birthday, I only have to keep moving, not ducking and hiding.

Getting on with it is good.

I suspect more of my posts are timely than witty or brilliant, but I go on.

Vicki, I'm so glad you do. Most of your posts are in the solid, workmanlike category of writing: this is what I dd, this is where I went, this is who I saw, this is an incident from that day, and behind the cut is something you won't find interesting (and I don't) or something of interest to X sort of person (and you turn out to be right, whether I'm X or not).

Because you write that way, I've read about wildlife in places I'd never expect it to be, the sword-swallower at the IgNobels (your account was far more complete and interesting than anything I read in the press), and recommendations for books I would not otherwise have sought out. And when you've seen something that inspires you, you do write with wit, brilliance, and lyricism.

The dailiness of your writing is an excellent thing. I aspire to it, in my head, but in my fingers, I do something else.

The "internal pressure to write something really good" stops me from writing anything at all more often than I care to say. I'm glad it didn't stop you, this time, and I vow to stop letting it stop me -- a little bit more often!

It's like overdue papers in college. Once the paper is late, it ought to be better than it would have been if one turned it in on time, and that makes it later and later, until one is in serious danger of failing the class, because one cannot possibly write a paper brilliant enough to make up for it being that appallingly late, can one?

In real life, the instructor usually only cares that the paper is done, once it's that late. It's going to be marked down the same amount, or not.

In even more real life, one's friends are not grading one's posts to LiveJournal.

Witty isn't necessary - who the hell can be witty all the time anyway?

Thanks. I will mutter that under my breath when I write my next post, which will happen after a shorter interval this time.

I like reading about your writing, your travels, your family, and your dog, by the way, even though I rarely comment on them.

To paraphrase the guidance one receives in the computer business, "Witty, brilliant, timely: pick any two."

Since this isn't a business, though, you and I ought to settle for "Accomplished," by which I mean, "Completed," rather than "Demonstrating one's mastery of the field of work."

One of my sewing teachers had a saying: Done is good.

She also kept reminding me, in many less-pithy ways, that excellence is achievable, but perfect is not. "What is a perfect shirt?" she asked. "It's clothing you can't wear, because it will never be finished."

Waiting is. Sharpen the blade a little every day, and you will be Zorro when the lighting strikes. On the other hand, I'm a fine one to talk, and Real Life also is. Write when it fits, and we'll be glad to hear from you.

I don't have to be Zorro. I know he uses a stuntman.

If you see Zorro using a stuntman, kill him. For the Zorro who uses a stuntman is not the true Zorro.

Also, the hotdog is enlightened.
